Drug Addiction

Assessment, Intervention, Case Management

Drug addiction can be characterized by a dependence on a legal or illegal drug or medication. Drug addicts are unable to control drug use and, like alcoholics, will continue to use despite experiencing negative consequences. Drug addicts often experience strong cravings and an inability to stop using without assistance.

Symptoms of drug addiction may include:

  • The need to use the drug daily, oftentimes throughout the day
  • The presence of intense cravings for the drug
  • An increase in tolerance
  • Experiencing legal problems, financial problems, problems with relationships or employment problems due to drug use
  • Engaging in behaviors, such as stealing, to obtain the drug
  • Engaging in risky behaviors while under the influence of the drug
  • Inability to stop using despite a desire to do so
  • Presence of withdrawal symptoms in the absence of the drug
